Leased lines
Previously on this site we have considered connecting two parts of a LAN (for example connecting between buildings on a school campus) using fibre optic cabling. Because this is a high-speed connection it provides a private broadband link between the two sites.
Of course digging a trench for cable and installing it between two buildings a few hundred metres apart is worth the cost and effort over the long term. But what if your business has offices in Manchester and Teesside for example?
It is possible to use pre-existing telecoms wiring which can be leased for a monthly fee to perform the same task as the private link we described above. Generally extra work needs to be done to connect to the long distance line to connect it to your local office networks. Most leased lines of this nature are charged partly by distance, because that has most impact on cost as longer lines may require more maintenance.
A leased line represents a very high level of security for your business, as it is very difficult to intercept data transfer across it.
A very useful application of a leased line is to connect your company directly to the Internet backbone. This means that you can host your own internet servers on your premises, and experience a very high broadband access. Essentially you become part of the Internet.
