Cable

This is usually regarded as a telephone and broadband line using Fibre optic technology. Cable can be used in-house to provide the backbone for your business LAN, or it can be used as a private connection between buildings, for example buildings on a school or college campus. A few companies provide cable, from their locations to a cable socket in their customers’ promises.

Companies providing this sort of cable connection still need to rely on copper wire circuits, because:

  • It is essential that devices like answer-phones and faxes can be connected on the customers premises.
  • If a phone call needs to be made outside the local cabled area, the cable network has to be connected to the PSTN network, for example for national or international calls.

If your telecoms provider can handle LAN installation, then you might wish to discuss whether it is cost effective to connect part or all or your in house wiring with fibre optic cable.
